My "TV Boy" from Penn's library card project. Can't wait to see the completed book! This was fun, fast and easy. Posted by Hello

Monday at my desk

Whew! What a busy weekend. It seems I was going full tilt for the last 2 days. The Atc swap in Bellingham was really well attended-there were 22 of us there and I managed to run out of cards, once again. I took Carie who is new to the Vancouver swap with me and I think she had a good time. We shopped at Treasury of Memories in Bellingham, had salad bar at Izzy's (This is a treat since there are no longer salad bars in Canada.) then went over to Stapadoodle and Paper Zone. I found all kinds of wonderful stamps I had to have. I decided to make Xmas postcards this year, rather than cards. I bought 3 stamps to do this and managed to get them done on Sunday. YAY!

I was amazed to see Xmas trees (the real kind) for sale south of the border. It seems really early and I have had thoughts of tinder dry trees bursting into flames prior to the 25th. It kind of worries me! Hopefully those putting up trees this early will be really careful. It would be awful to have a house fire anytime, but especially during the holidays.

Sunday I was busy working on the Xmas postcards. I want to get them in the mail this week. Today I am working on finishing up a few art projects that are due in the next week or so so I can clear my plate for the holidays. I am sure I will keep working on odds and ends of art over the holidays, but nothing with a hard and fast deadline for the rest of this month.

So far today I have finished my library card art for Penn's latest project. She gave each of us 2 identical library card catalogue cards. The cards have a description of a book on them. The idea was to read this description and then do art on the back of the card to match. Mine said "TV Boy: To escape failure, boredom and loneliness, a young boy plunges with all his imagination into the world of television." PLUNGES! ROFL! I will post a pic of what I came up with so you can see my interpretation. Penn is going to colour copy all the entries and everyone who participated will get a book. It should be really cool!

Okay, I have to run. I have some robot art I need to do now and then a trip to the post office to mail off a bunch of stuff. I wish I had stocks in the P.O.-I think I owe my soul to Canada Post by now! *waves*

The hand painted ATC I made for the swap tomorrow using my new Kroma paints. I just love the colours! Posted by Hello

The altered canvass bag I made for the N'ness swap. I wanted to do a Da Vinci style theme. Not a great pic, but oh well! Posted by Hello

TGIF!!

Friday at long last! Tomorrow is the Bellingham ATC swap and I am looking forward to shopping while I am down there. The Canadian dollar is finally at a decent standing so the sting of the exchange is a little less. Should be a good day tomorrow.

In the meantime, I have completed a few projects:
- I had some samples to make for the Scrapbooking store using this black strapping stuff they had.
-I altered a small canvass bag for a N'ness project. I just mailed that one out.
-For the Secret Artsy Santa swap I am organizing with some friends I made a painting for my swapee. I can't post it till after Xmas or she might see it.
- I just finished painting some ATCs for tomorrow's swap. I made 17 in all and it took hours, but I enjoyed the process. It won't be something I will do all the time-it's too time consuming.

I still have to get some sort of robot art done for another N'ness project and then Penn is hostessing another one using cards from the old library card catalogue. I got a card called "TV Boy" or something like that, so I have to work on that yet. I have an idea what I am going to do, so it shouldn't take me too long. I am still working on my NYC journal. I have to work on page titles and then figure out how I am going to incorporate the journaling I wrote while I was there. I think I will sit down and figure that out on Sunday.

WHEW! I think that's it! It is good feeling so productive. There are a couple of Xmas gifts I want to make but that shouldn't take me too long. Can't say more than that here-I don't want to spill the beans prior to the 25th! (I never know who might be reading this who might be on my gift list.)

Okay, going now so I can post some pics with this. *waves*

Tuesday night

Just a quick hello before I call it a day. Tonight, after dinner, I got inspired to do some painting with some of my new paints from Kroma. I have discovered I have a thing for house images. I don't know why. I painted a house and then added some words to the image and some paper stars and a moon. I just fiddled and painted, not giving much thought to what I was doing-just enjoying and trusting the process. What I came up with pleases me. It will probably find a home with a friend as an Xmas gift. I am thinking now of painting more of these little houses. I want one for myself. I am considering cutting down the size of the base I am painting on to fit a standard sized frame so I could frame it for giving. I have to think on it a bit more. There might be another answer.

Anyway, that was my pre-Amazing Race activity for tonight and I had to tear myself away to actually watch the show. It's surprising how content you can feel just sitting and having the freedom to create. Maybe I will dream up some more things to paint tomorrow! Nighters!

My paper catalogue with samples of all the papers I bought. I am really liking this idea! I think it will be a huge help. Posted by Hello

Weekend Review

My fingers continue to heal. I am still swathed in bandages but am hoping maybe by tomorrow I can take a peek and see if they can come off. It's near impossible to do art with them on, which is driving me nuts.

Yesterday I was spoiled absolutely rotten. My friend Penn gave me a big bag of goodies, including a cardboard cigar box, a hardcover copy of Nick Bantock's Artful Dodger and another hardcover book on tools to alter. Sandy, another friend gifted me with some small plastic floss boxes to store art supplies in and a wooden cigar box complete with cool clasp and hinges from Nicaragua. (I think it's cedar.) I am looking foreword to altering both boxes.

Penn and I had also talked about a small blank spiral book for putting paper samples in. When I made art for Jan's book, I needed to know what companies had made the papers I used. Many of them I didn't have info on and so I had to go down to the scrapbooking stores to see if I could spot them again and find out. I decided if I cut a small piece from each different sheet I buy and put it in a book with the info, it would make things loads easier. That way, if I ran out and wanted more, I would have a record of where I bought it and the name of the company it came from if the store needed to order more for me. Anyway, Penn very kindly made me that spiral book so now I can work on cataloguing my papers. YAY! I like to be somewhat organized.

Our ATC group met yesterday to swap and it was the biggest gathering we have had in a long time. I think there were about 20 people there. Cards were flying back and forth and we practically took over the coffee shop where we meet. We also had lots of show and tell going on and several altered books changed hands. There were some new art projects discussed. It's turning into a real art event each month. I took Sandy with me to check out the group and see what ATC swapping was all about. I think she had a good time and she commented later how friendly everyone was. It really is a nice group of people. Now I have to get some cards made for Bellingham's swap this week. I won't be going to December's swaps-too busy a month for me.

Okay, time for me to get moving. I need to tidy up my workspace today-it's a disaster! Laters!

My poor fingers! Posted by Hello

Don't Try This At Home

Last night I did something monumentally stupid. I was making dinner and put the dinner plates down on the top of the stove for a minute on an element. Dh got talking to me while I was getting everything organized to make eggs. I turned an element on and walked away for a few minutes. Then I came back and went to move the plates. I picked them up. I had accidentally turned the element on that they were sitting on. The plates were red hot. It took me a minute to realize I was burning the heck out of my fingers and then I dropped the whole stack. They smashed all over the kitchen floor.

I eventually had to get myself to the walk in clinic-I have 2nd degree burns to the pads of my middle and ring fingers of my right hand. The doc applied medicine and bandages . It hurts like hell-very, very painful.

Please people, don't ever do what I did. It was not only a stupid mistake but a painful one. The worst part is I can't do art with my hand like this. It's going to be a few days till I can get the bandages off. :(

Plugging away

I have been working on my NYC journal diligently and the other day I was happily adhering photos to my pages when I discovered I had used the last page. Problem was, I still had several pages worth of photos left to include! What to do?!? Well, I decided to run right down to the scrapbooking store to see if I could find similar coloured card stock and cut some more pages myself. I did manage to find the exact same colour and weight! (And for a mere 47c each!) Yesterday I took them with me to the lines and cut them to size between calls. Then I used an exacto knife to add the square holes for the coil binding to go through. It was pretty easy. Problem solved! Now I can finish mounting the photos and then get on to the business of journaling!

Last night I got the funniest call. One of the woman at a local scrapbook store where I go regularly called me. She said she wanted to know if I would be willing to make some samples from some stuff their store got in if I could come up with some ideas about how to use it. I said I love a challenge, so I would try. Turns out the stuff she were referring to is some 2 1/2 inch wide black fabric strapping-it looks just like the nylon strapping you find on luggage. I have no idea how they came to have that at the store, but I will do my best to figure out how people can use it for scrapbooking.

In the meantime, I need to finish my ATCs for the weekend swap and get a page done in a friend's Altered Book. (This is if I can keep my eyes open-I slept lousy last night after donating blood and running around all day. I hit the point of exhaustion and went beyond. A nap might be in order.)

Anyway, that accounts for my current projects. I have several things I am dying to try, but I think at this point, I will probably not get to them till after the new year. I really should make a list so I don't forget! Hopefully I will have some NYC journal pics to post shortly. Stay tuned!

NYC Journal

Still working on my NYC journal. It's going pretty good. I had to take a brief break from it yesterday to deal with some family stuff. I got right back to it this morning and realized I need to run over to my local scrapbooking store to buy then new Ranger red ink pad. I need it! I am trying to keep within the red, white/cream and blue colour pallet on this project. I want it to be totally American looking.

The Gypsy Junque journal I am using has lots of hand inclusions, but I have also added a few of my own. My main problem has been coming up with ways to include the memorabilia that is larger than the journal and would be ruined by cutting it down. I have had a couple of ideas, but a few things have stumped me. I am working around those items for the time being. I am getting excited about getting it finished now!

I have to say the pictures of Ground Zero stirred up lots of thoughts and memories. I still can't believe I stood there with two people who are so dear to me who lost their son there. It seems like something out of a dream. Just being there on what I consider to be sacred ground and seeing and feeling the enormity of it has changed me forever. In fact, the whole story behind why I went to NYC in the first place seems like something not quite real. It's a miracle-that much I know.

Okay, enough deep thoughts for the day-I am heading out to the scrapbook store!

Sunday, rainy Sunday

Okay so it's 11:30 a.m. and the best I could do so far is to throw on an old, comfy pair of sweats- I have not even run a brush through my curls and I am at the table, doing art. Have I graduated into obsession? You betcha!

I decided it was time to work on a journal of my trip to New York this summer. I have all the photos developed and a bag full of ephemera from my adventure. I thought I had better get on it before the memories fade. I purchased a Junque Journal from 7 Gypsies especially for this project and am just getting things organized into pages. So far I have covered the cover with a cool paper that has antique red, white and blue stripes on it. While the book came with lots of inclusions-clear plastic sleeves, manilla tags, glassine envelopes and mini envelopes, I am probably going to add a few more myself for little bits of things I saved. I also want to do some journaling about my adventures. I'll probably type them out since my handwriting is pretty messy. I'd like to have it finished by next weekend, if I can. (Fingers crossed that I will have the time.)

My friend Jan keeps a journal every time she travels, which is alot and I really admire that. She does it altered book style-she keeps ephemera from the places she visits to use in her journals. I haven't been lucky enough to see one of hers finished, but I imagine it's interesting. She has been all over the place!

So..hopefully, I will have some pics of it by this time next week, if all goes well. I only have a couple more hours to work on it today-I have to go out and make a speech this afternoon. *groan* Is there a hole anywhere nearby I can crawl into?!?

Okay, I am heading back to art central to see how much I can accomplish before I have to get ready to go out. Happy arting everyone!

Update

Just a quick post to say that I added a new link on my links page to a site that is home to my favourite animated escape. Check out "Making Fiends"! I guarentee it will make you smile!

Bottle Cap Collages. The colours are terrible in this pic-it doesn't do them justice, but this was the best pic I could get! Posted by Hello

Purposeful art

Have I mentioned lately how wonderful Nervousness.org is?!? I am so pleased my friend Penn told me about it. It's so much fun to have a constant stream of ideas and projects available to participate in. The newest project I signed up for is one that is sort of set up like "The Artist's Way'. There is a new book out by SARK called "Make Your Creative Dreams Real" and a group of us are going to spend a year working our way through it together. We will be checking in monthly by each writing a letter about the month's chapter and what we are doing. Everyone sends their letter to the project organizer and then she will copy the letters and send them out to each of us as a creativity newsletter. I think this is a brilliant idea and I am looking forward to working with the others. It will be a good way to measure our progress and support and encourage one another. I am psyched!

On Sunday Penn was over for an art party and we had a good time. She worked on her ATCs for our monthly swap and I fiddled with some bottle cap collages. I made several and have not yet decided what exactly I am going to do with them-whether they will become magnets or jewelry, but I liked the way they turned out. The trick though, was keeping an eye on them as they dried so they didn't end up with bubbles in the glaze. I had to keep looking at them every 1/2 hour and popping the bubbles that formed. There were 4 that ended up with this weird line through them and I am thinking about adding more glaze to see if I can eliminate it. If not, live and learn!

It's so nice hearing from those of you who have stopped by my website and emailed to say hello! I just love how small the world has become thanks to the wonders of modern technology. For me, the best part is the community of artists I have connected with. It ROCKS!

Art Party

So it's been pouring rain here all weekend-that's Autumn on the wet coast. Yesterday evening I decided that it would be nice to have a friend over for the afternoon and just do art together. She's coming about noonish and we will just take over the dining room table, put some CDs in the stereo and create! As Pooh says "It's so much friendlier with two." I am going to try and get a jump on Xmas gifts if I can figure out what I want to make. Guess I should start with a list...

I picked up the newest issue of Somerset Magazine. It's not an overly Christmassy issue, which was a nice change. The theme was chocolate so there were alot of art examples in it that were in brown tones. I did notice though the huge amount of advertising-it's beginning to feel like there are more ads than articles. (IMHO) I think my new favourite magazine is the Cloth, Paper, Scissors one. The photos are really fantastic in it and there are lots of techniques to try, which I like. I also noticed that Somerset is putting out a book on ATCs. I would really like to have a look at that one-it looks like it's going to be good!

Okay I am off to make sushi so we can have it when we're ready for a lunch break. Laters!

Creative bender

Today I am working on a small altered canvass purse for a swap and munching on chocolate Nascars. I have till Dec. 15th to complete the project, but I decided I wanted to get it done early and off my plate. I am enjoying stamping on it with some of my new Da Vinci stamps. It's lookin' pretty good. I just realized that Somerset Studio had altered canvass purses in it's Nov./Dec. 2003 issue. Of course I had already altered mine before I realized this. Oh well-next time, I will know to look there for inspiration.

Celine of Green Frog Studio is hostessing 3 different chunky book swaps. I signed up for the "Once Upon a Time" book, which isn't due till March. I figured with running my own Book of Naughty, I has better do one that has a later date then mine so I don't get behind on anything. I like the idea of having a collection of these small wonders to thumb through when the spirits strike me.

I also began keeping an art ideas journal in late August. Any time I have an idea that I can't get to right away, I jot it down in the journal so I can go back to it later. I am hoping this will help when the inevitable creative dry spell hits. I also have lots and lots of ideas and it's impossible to get to them all at once so this precludes me forgetting anything good. So far, I am liking this method of journaling. When I go back and reread what I have written I have an "oh yeah!" moment.

Okay, my break's up! Time to get back to work! Happy creating everyone!

**If any of you are looking for the Book of Naughty pages, they should be listed down the sidebar. Any problems finding them, just email me!

"Je Me Souviens" created for Celine.  Posted by Hello

Rainy day

Ah Mondays, either you love 'em or you hate 'em. I kind of like them-it's the day that everyone clears out of the house and I can have peace and quiet. Usually, the trade off is some tidying up after a weekend of family life.

It's whizzing down here and cold, the perfect day to stay home, put my favourite CDs in the stereo and make some art. An online friend, Celine just moved to eastern Canada last week. She came from France and is here so her boyfriend can learn English. I decided to make her a housewarming piece of art that I am mailing to her this afternoon. The art is a collage on canvass called "Je me souviens". It's the motto of Quebec where she has moved to and what it means, literally is "I will remember". The sentiment is that the people of Canada come from many nations around the world and it expresses the desire to honour where you come from, to not forget your heritage, while celebrating your place in Canada. I used an image from Celine's own collage sheet collection and added a vintage page from Petit Larousse which was a staple dictionary/encyclopedia used in Canadian schools in the 1950's. I wanted to marry the past and the present, Canada and France for her in this collage. I also added a compass to represent her journey and sense of adventure and a Fleur de Lis, a symbol popular in both Quebec and France which represents perfection, light and life. I hope she will like it!
