Tell All

Ages ago, my friend Seth Apter asked "What's one thing that you know now that you would have liked to have known when you first started to create art?"

It was so long ago, that my answer surprised even me, because I couldn't remember what I'd said. *laughs* To find out what that was, pop over to Seth's blog! There's lots of great responses being shared there.

Good {Artsy} Things

Project 365 (January 10th, 2013)

I have so many good things to share with you!

The wonderful and quirky Mary Ann Moss is offering her Remains of the Day class at a winter sale price of $40! (Reg. $60) I took this online class a few years ago and the things I learned I still use on a regular basis today. It's hands down THE BEST journal/mixed media class I have ever taken and worth every penny. Click the Youtube link on the sidebar and you can see some of the journals I've made after taking this class. Mary Ann is also offering Full Tilt Boogie, another journal making class for $48. (Reg. $70)

My friend Tina and a couple of her friends, Celeste and Gwen have launched a new creative community, Tending the Fire. They are working on a new art zine, which will be available soon. Yay! If you want to stay in the loop, visit their website and sign up to subscribe to their blog posts. (It's free.)

My pal Seth is about to launch the latest edition of The Pulse. If you're an artist, this is your chance to weigh in on all sorts of art-related things. The questions are always interesting and revealing. Seth has also booked a ton of workshops around the US, so check the list-he may be coming to a city near you!

Photography genius, Vivienne McMaster has a new self-portrait e-course, Be Your Own Beloved which begins on Feb. 1st. In a recent post, she talked about her own evolution as a self-portrait photographer. One of her strengths as a teacher is that she is so encouraging and supportive about allowing you to begin where you are. You can be a rank beginner and still over the course of her classes turn out beautiful work. This is perfect gentle introduction into the world of self-portraits.

Meanwhile, back in my little corner of the world, my husband and I spent part of yesterday at the Gastown Old Spaghetti Factory being official taste testers for some new menu items they are working on. The food was crazy good and it was fun giving our feedback on each dish. I've never done something like that before, but thanks to watching a couple of seasons of Master Chef, I felt like I had some idea of the type of comments they would be interested in. We got to meet Chris, the manager, who is a super nice guy. If you're out and about in Vancouver, you should pop in for a bite. They're going to have some great new additions to their menu soon!

I am working on the presentation I am giving my UBC medical students next week. During our last session, the topic was my health journey and this time, it's about my life, outside of my diagnosis. This session will help them form a picture of me as not just a patient, but also as a person. I think this is a pretty important distinction. It's always important to me that my health care professionals recognize that I'm not just a set of symptoms, a problem to fix or a disease, but a living, breathing multi-faceted human being with feelings, dreams and a whole life I'm living outside of dealing with chronic illness and disability. I'm looking forward to presenting this side of things. I think it's going to generate some really interesting discussions.

I am also attending a Health Mentors' meeting next week, where I will get to give feedback on how the program is going so far. We're also going to talk about the symposium that my students and I will participating in in the spring and getting more information on what that will entail. I know that we'll be presenting and having the opportunity to hear the presentations of the other teams, but it will be good to get the specifics. We'll have some work to do!

In two weeks, I will be presented with the Queen's medal! I'm very excited and more than a little nervous-I really have no idea what to expect and no idea who will be there. It's all a bit mysterious. The one thing I do know is that I'll definitely have Kleenex in my pocket!

The Pulse Charity Auction

This is my friend Seth Apter, who is one of the kindest, most generous and genuine people I know.

Seth lives in New York City and while no harm came to him personally during the storm last week, he, (like many of us) has been touched by the stories of devastation and loss Sandy left in its wake, particularly in his hometown. Seth, ever the instigator (and I mean that in the nicest way possible!) has a fantastic plan about how we can help the people of New York City recover.

Here's what it is, in his own words:

"As I traveled around promoting the book, I obtained as many signatures as I could from all the contributing artists I met along the way, as I knew that one day there were be a special reason to do this. And today is that day. I have decided to auction off a copy of the book, (signed by 30 artists) along with a piece of my art to benefit the victims of Sandy. The charity I have chosen is The Mayor's Fund To Advance New York City. I will be donating 100% of the proceeds and this fund uses 100% of the monies received for direct aid."

This is a beautiful book, made all the more special by merit of having been signed by so many of the artists involved. It took a community coming together to create this book and it will take a community effort now to make a difference for those who so desperately need our help.

Seth has posted all the details of this effort on his blog, which you can find here. In addition to the book, there are also some original artworks that will be included.

There is the option to make a straight donation of any amount, if you would prefer. Every little bit helps. You can also help by spreading the word if you have a blog, twitter or facebook. Please tell your peeps and ask them to tell their peeps and let's see how much good we can do, because it's the right thing to do.

"There's a destiny that makes us brothers,
none goes his way alone.
All that we send into the life of others
comes back into our own."

~Edwin Markham

EDIT: So many of the artists involved in the book wanted to help Seth with this auction that they've donated even MORE art to the cause. As a result, Seth now has two bundles he's auctioning off and there will be more added. Please click the link to get all the details and check back often to see which new bundles that are available.

Good Mail Day!

It's here! Stampington's Somerset Studio arrived in the magic mailbox today! I didn't know they were going to send me a complimentary issue. They usually do when you write an article for them, but I forgot they also do it when they publish your work. I am glad they did-I haven't been able to track one down in stores here yet. (Though certainly not for lack of trying!)

So here's my work between the pages. I posted images of my entire 5x5 submission here, if you'd like to see the whole thing. Seth did a great job on the article, all TEN pages of it! It's really nice that Stampington made so much room in this issue to showcase some of the 110 pieces Seth received for this call. Congratulations Seth! Long live The Pulse! Seth is now working on his second book, which is wonderful news. I can't wait to see it!

Also in the November/December issue is a great artist profile by Rice Freeman-Zachery about my friend DJ Pettit. DJ is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet and she crazy talented. She does amazing work combining her beautiful photographs with paint and textiles. I've taken a class with DJ and the techniques she's developed are like nothing I'd ever seen before. It was great reading this article and seeing how her work has grown over the years. She sent me one of her handmade books years ago and I treasure it. It's so uniquely DJ.

In addition the the magazine, the mail also brought my order from Artchix Studio. When I saw these really cool palmistry wood cuts online and had to order some for myself. (I have a thing for hands!)

Helga always ships things lightening fast and they're always beautifully packaged.

She also includes something a little extra and these were the extras this time. Love them! Yesterday was a good mail day all around!

An Old Favourite

My friend Seth sent me an email this morning, letting me know my favourite piece of art is being featured on his blog this morning as part of his Playing Favourites series. What's comical is that every time I submit something for one of his series, I totally forget what I've sent until it pops up. I am always just as surprised as everyone else. *grins*

So what was my favourite piece? Click here to find out!

It's a blustery, wet day here on the west coast of Canada. I am heading out on a really cool adventure with a friend. I'll post about it tomorrow! (That is if I don't get blown back to Oz!)

It Never Gets Old!

Image Copyright Stampington LLC 2012

I came home the other night to an email from my friend Seth Apter. He wanted to let me know that an article he'd written about his 5x5 project was going to be published in the November/December issue of Somerset Studio. YAY!

Seth put a call out way back in the late winter/early spring for artwork. The only guidelines were that it had to  answer one of three questions Seth asked and measure 5x5 inches. I chose the question "Who has had the most impact on your creative life?" which was a no-brainer for me and I answered the question in zine form. I hand delivered my work to Seth when he was here in early May on his book tour for The Pulse of Mixed Media.

Seth's email also informed me that my work has been included in his soon-to-be-published article and not only that-it's also being used to promote the upcoming issue it appears in on Stampington's website

That's the cover of the zine I made, featuring one of my mixed media photographs, Skydiving in the upper left hand corner. Cool! I can't wait to pick up this issue of Somerset!

Congratulations and thank you Seth for generously including me!
You are the best!

The Pulse of Mixed Media: Vancouver Edition

Last night was Seth's book signing for the Pulse of Mixed Media!

It was held at the beautiful Marche St. George, which is a little gem tucked away in Vancouver. It's a very old corner store, so it has lots of character.

I love that the front door is painted with chalkboard paint. Charming!

Seth, Patricia, Leslie and I brought art that was in the book to share.

And here we all are! (Me, Patricia Larsen, Seth Apter, Leslie Avon Miller.)

Seth signing my book. He signed alot of books!

Seth gave a talk about some of the survey answers in the book and asked Leslie and I to read the written portions of our contributions.

Smoozing! There was a very good turn out. Thanks to Penelope, Vivienne, Carol, Jennifer & her mum for coming! It was so good to see you all and celebrate the book with you!

I wanted to share with you, one more piece of art that I just finished creating for a project that's tied to the book. In March and April, Seth had an open call for a 5X5 project. He asked three questions and you could choose which ones you wanted to answer. The idea was to present your answer in a creative 5x5 format.
I decided to do mine in book form.

I made a CD envelope which I designed by first collaging papers and then photocopying them, so I could have a smooth finish.

The books itself it about photography.

The final page reveals the questions I was addressing and my answer:
Who has had the most impact on my creative life?
It's a no-brainer-it's Vivienne McMaster!

I decided not to post these photos until after Seth and Vivienne had seen the finished piece. When I showed it to Vivienne last night, I think she was very surprised. I promised I'd make one for her to keep.

The whole event was so much fun. Everyone was in good spirits and it was really nice that so many of my friends showed up to support Seth. (And by extension, me.) It's the first time this particular group of friends have met one another and I was so pleased everyone got on so well. It's fabulous to have a bunch of creatives hit it off. It was also really wonderful to finally meet Seth. I only have the nicest things to say about him. He's genuine, kind and funny and you can't help but adore him.

Today Seth's off to Washington State for the final stop on his book tour. If you're in the Seattle area, he'll be at Bellevue Art & Frame on Saturday, May 5th, 2012 from noon-2 pm. Contributing artists Donna Watson and Leslie Avon Miller will be participating in an artist discussion, an art demo and book signing. This event is free! Be there, or be square!

More Secrets Revealed!

The countdown is on! In a mere 14 days, Seth Apter, author of The Pulse of Mixed Media will be in Vancouver! WOOHOO!! I am really looking forward to finally meeting him in person. To celebrate, I thought I would share with you some of the "secrets" Seth unearthed about me that weren't published in the book. Seth asks the best questions!

Here we go!

One thing I have never shared with the art community is…

One time...at art camp… *grins* Seriously, I am an open book and I wear my heart on my sleeve. If there’s something I haven’t shared, it’s probably because no one’s asked yet.

What is your secret dream as an artist?

If I cop to my secret dream, then it kind of puts it out there, doesn’t it? Would it be terribly cliché to say that someday, I would like to walk into a bookstore or a library and see a book with my name on the cover? Before I was ever an artist, I was a writer. When I was a little kid, I attended writers’ conferences and my poetry was published when I was a teen. All of this led me to believe that when I grew up, I’d go into journalism. Funny how things turn out-I took a single art class in high school, which I didn’t enjoy very much (the teacher would come over, grab the paintbrush out of my hand and paint on my canvass-ARGH!!) and here I am some 20 odd years later, creating art every day. Who knew? Now it feels like marrying the two worlds would be the natural thing to do. I know in my heart I have a book or two in me; the question is whether those books are destined to make it to print or not. We shall see. I believe that everything in my life always unfolds exactly as its meant to.

Have you ever received artwork from others and reworked it to make it your own?

The only time I’ve ever reworked another person’s piece of art was as part of a collaborative project. Linda Woods (Author of Visual Chronicles and Journal Revolution) sent me a couple of her art postcards. The idea was to take them and alter them however I chose and send them back to her. One was a mixed media collage of a pear (which she uses as a symbolic representation of herself) and the other was a photograph, shot through the rain-soaked window of a NYC taxi. It was an interesting exercise and I enjoyed working on something that was just for fun. I believe she has the altered postcards posted on her website.

What is one current trend that you wish would go away?

Printed packing tapes, tissue tapes and Washi tapes. (Washi tapes are Japanese printed masking tapes) It’s terrible. This stuff like artistic crack-I can’t stop buying it. The colours and patterns are endless. I blame Teesha Moore for turning me onto it. She posted photos of her collection on her blog and that was the beginning of the end for me. I’m hopelessly addicted. *laughs*

In your opinion, is creativity built-in or learned? Or both?

Wow! That’s a really good question! Personally, I think all human beings have the innate capacity to be creative. It’s paramount to our survival as species and how that creative energy manifests is unique to each individual. I think the learning comes in when we seek to strengthen a particular aspect of our personal creativity by gaining knowledge from mentors or seeking out a formal education. People often claim they aren’t creative, but I think it’s just a lack of vision on their part. They may be very gifted in a way that’s not traditionally seen as being creative-the sciences come to mind. It’s seen as a very right brained thing and yet scientists are called on to find workable solutions for very complicated and often very technical problems that require an incredible amount of creative thinking to solve. If you've ever watched the movie Apollo 13, you’ll understand exactly what I mean.

How has the Internet changed your artistic practice?

The Internet is what led me to embracing my creative self. It’s been the conduit for connecting with other artists and opened up amazing opportunities to contribute to the artistic community. I’ve been able to work on numerous projects, with an incredible array of very talented artists, which I wouldn’t have had access to otherwise. I keep up-to-date on current trends, techniques and projects via the blogs I read daily and I do a good 50% of my art supply shopping online through independent online stores and marketplaces like Etsy.

Do you enjoy working more intuitively or by carefully thinking through your process?

Most of the time I have a rough vision of what the project is going to be and then, as I begin working, the art just makes itself, which is the best way I can explain it. Sometimes it’s very close to how I pictured it in my mind’s eye and sometimes it’s gone off in a totally different direction and the finished piece turns out better than what I had anticipated. When I get out of my own way and just let the art happen, I feel that I produce my best work.

Do you create art to work through inner issues or is studio time more of a distraction to keep from facing your problems?

Art has saved me so many times. In January 2004, as I was grieving the loss my beloved Gramps, I was invited for the very first time to do artwork for publication. The timing could not have been better. I spent hours working on pieces for the book with the stereo cranked up and I would be absolutely sobbing while I worked. I’d begin working right after breakfast and from there, I’d completely lose track of time. Time felt oddly suspended when I was in the creative groove. Working towards a publisher’s deadline gave me a sense of purpose at that difficult, sad time and helped me work through my grief.

In late 2007, when I was going through the process of being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, (a life altering, incurable neurological disease) I once again turned to art for comfort. It was a real struggle for me because I lost all the feeling in my hands at that time and could barely manage even the simplest of tasks. It was both frightening and frustrating. Ultimately, the loss of feeling in my hands became permanent. It took almost a year to adapt to the extreme numbness, but I really feel that by pushing myself to keep creating, I was able to retain dexterity in my hands.

I don’t know how much time other artists spend in their studios, but I am in my studio every single day. It’s the first place I go when I get up and it’s the last place I am before I go to bed. I think for me, creating art is absolutely essential to my well-being. It allows me to feel like there is a small measure of normalcy, in a life that’s been turned upside down by MS and on the most difficult days, it provides a way for me to express feelings and emotions that there are simply no words for.

What do you think your preferred art medium says about your personality?

“The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

The other thing I wanted to share with you is that Seth  is the cover guy on the latest issue of Somerset Studio! He's also featured in an Artist Profile and there is a review of  The Pulse of Mixed Media in there as well! It's so great to see someone who works so hard and gives so much to the mixed media community have this type of recognition. He is most deserving.

On May 3rd, Seth will be having a book signing and launch party as Le Marche St. George in Vancouver at 7 p.m. You can not only meet Seth, but also a number of contributing artists from the book, including Patricia Larsen, Leslie Avon Miller and ME! There will also be an art exhibit, Con Leche with works by the Larsen Family (Patricia, Janaki & Klee) and Seth Apter.

Mark your calendars and come join us-it's going to be a great time!

AnonMS

First off, I want to say that opening up a beautiful, brand new book seeing this:
(top right)

And this:

And this:

between the covers never, ever gets old.
It's an incredible rush, every single time.

My copy of Seth Apter's new book, The Pulse of Mixed Media arrived on Tuesday. I've already read it cover to cover and...well...WOW! I knew it was going to be great, but it far exceeded my expectations.

The best part for me was combing through to see how many of the artists were personal friends and how many are new to me. I never know who else is contributing to a particular book until I have a copy in my hands, so there's always that element of surprise for me. Seth's book was a delightful mixture of both familiar faces and artists I haven't crossed paths with before.

Here's the original of AnnonMS, which I still haven't gotten around to framing.
I wanted to talk a little bit about it.

Seth asked us to create a piece of art that depicted our greatest fear. In all honesty, it takes something pretty significant to scare me. There was really only one thing I could think of talking about, because it poses a real and present danger in my life and that's living with Multiple Sclerosis.

I've talked about MS here on my blog, but only from time to time, mainly because I believe that whatever you give attention to, dictates your intention and I really don't want MS to be the focus of my life, or my blog. The funny thing is that as I go about living my life, I seem to have evolved into what I jokingly refer to as a "closet MS activist". I'm certainly not bucking to be the poster child for MS, but the opportunity to share my experience of this disease (which affects every aspect of my life, including my artistic life ) with others keeps appearing. I feel like if I can use what's happening to me to help someone else, whether through educating future doctors, mentoring a young person living with MS, serving on a city committee to improve accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities or simply creating a piece of art that speaks to my experience, then it's my responsibility to do so.

I trust Seth implicitly and when he asked, I knew that if I allowed myself to be vulnerable and brutally honest, the work would be received in the spirit with which it was intended. My instincts were right. Seth got it and his editor, Tonya got it. It makes me really happy that I took the risk to stand up and show my soul and that this was the piece they chose for the book. I think that as an artist, it's important to honour not just the good things in my life, but also the things that I struggle with. In order to authentically tell my story, I need to embrace all of it. There's beauty in the truth, even if parts of it are harder to acknowledge.

Important Stuff!

Prairie Girl

Yesterday was my birthday. THANK YOU to everyone who called, emailed or otherwise sent birthday greetings. I'm feelin' the love.

It was for the most part a quiet day, seeing as it fell on a Thursday, but my guys did take me out for dinner last night and then my son bought a big Black Forest cake for dessert. The celebration will continue over the weekend. I'm doing something fun, but that's a whole other post.

This whole week, I've been the feature artist on Create Mixed Media for The Week As Art project. I had an email from Tonya Davenport saying that she's still looking for artists to visualize a week in 2012, so if you're interested, please get in touch with her. The project specifics and her contact info are here.

Wednesday night, a bunch of the Pulse of Mixed Media artist joined Seth Apter and a bunch of his fans in Tweet Chat for the Twitter Launch Party for his book. It was crazy fun-the chatter was non-stop and everyone had a really good time. The hour just flew by! If you missed out, check Seth's blog and see if his book tour is coming to a city near you. (And if so, save the date!) The info will be on the sidebar.

Also, Seth has been posting daily about the 31 spotlight artists in the book, so it's your chance to learn a little more about each of them. If you comment on any of these posts, he's putting your name into a draw to win a signed copy of his book, so definitely check it out!

And...as if all that's not enough, Seth has also issued an open call for artwork which once submitted will travel with him on his book tour. If you want the details about that, click here.

WHEW! I think that's all the important stuff I had to share. Meanwhile, I'm busy working on a zillion things at once. I've been doing alot of writing and HTML stuff for Papergirl Vancouver. (I'm working on the 2012 organizing committee.) I'll have details soon, including an open call, which I hope YOU will consider answering!

There's A Party & You're Invited!

On Wednesday March 21st,  Seth Apter will be celebrating the release of his book, The Pulse of Mixed Media by holding a Twitter Launch Party and YOU (yes YOU!) are invited. The Launch Party will run from from 9-10pm EST, (6-7pm PST) and you will be able to talk in real time to many of the contributing artists from the book. (Including me!)

Everybody is welcome, but you need to have  to join in and for this party, all tweets will need to include the hashtag #PulseBook.

Like any party, you will need directions to get there.
Seth has explained the two routes that you can take:

If you already use (or are willing to join) a Twitter client such as TweetDeck or HootSuite, you can sign up to follow the hashtag #PulseBook. In doing so, all the tweets that include #PulseBook will automatically show up on your account. But...so will all the other tweets you normally get. Remember, at the party your tweets must include #PulseBook to be seen.

2. If you use TweetChat, you can spend the hour in a TweetChat room where you will only be able to see the tweets from people at the party and no other tweets from those people you follow. Signing up is quick and easy and I highly recommend this approach, even if you already use TweetDeck or HootSuite.

You can try it out now. It's simple. Sign up with TweetChat in advance here by linking your Twitter account. When the party starts, sign into your TweetChat account and enter hashtag #PulseBook. This will automatically take you to a "private room" where all the other Launch partygoers will be. Chat in real time for the hour and when the party is over, just close the page.

Personally I am going the TweetChat route-it will be less distracting because I will only be viewing tweets for that hour that pertain to the #PulseBook launch party. I am glad Seth has given us such great instructions-that will save my sanity because there's nothing for me to figure out. I've already test driven TweetChat and it's super simple. Hooray!

So...I hope that you will join us on Wednesday night. Bring a friend-the more, the merrier! If you have any questions, you can email Seth.
See you there!

Save the Date!

Remember I said there would be more exciting art news coming up? Well here it is!  On May 3rd, 2012 Seth Apter will be in Vancouver as part of his book tour for The Pulse Of Mixed Media!

Seth's book signing and launch party will take place at the fabulous  Le Marche St. George, 4393 St. George (at the corner of 28th), Vancouver at 7 p.m. Also attending will be a number of contributing artists from the book, including Patricia Larsen and...ME! Yes, I'm going to be there too! This event will be held in conjunction with Con Leche, an art exhibition including works by both Seth and the Larsen family, Patricia, Janaki, Klee.

YOU are invited and I hope you'll come! Feel free to RSVP here in the comments-I'd love to know who'll be joining us!

I've been sitting on this news for awhile and I'm so excited to be able to share it with you now. As you can see, I've circled it on my calendar. I wouldn't miss it for anything! Only 70 days till Seth arrives!

If you're not local, Seth has a number of other stops on his book tour. You can learn more here. (And check back often because he said he'll be adding to the list!)

In the meantime, you will also want to mark March 21st on your calendar as well. Seth will be hosting a Twitter Launch Party. Log into Twitter between 9-10pm EST (that's 6-7 pm PST for those of us on the west coast) to have a real time talk with Seth and many of the contributors in the book, including me. More details about this event will be posted on Seth's blog as the date approaches.

Some Things I Want to Share

Legacy

Only 2 more weeks of Getting Through the Grey! The weeks weeks have whipped by so quickly. I feel like my time in this class has been really productive. I leaned that I love taking still lifes and in playing around photographing some of my mixed media artwork I've discovered another signature element of my work. Little by little I am finding my voice.

Speaking of finding my voice, I wanted to share a couple of tracks that are getting alot of play in my studio right now. One is this cover of Leonard Cohen's Dance Me to the End of Love. Madeleine Peyroux did a beautiful job of it and now the Civil Wars have also cut a pretty track.

Have a listen:

Another tune I am loving right now is The Wood Song by the Indigo Girls. Last week I was randomly playing music on my iTunes and this one came up. It's been in my library for a very long time, but for some reason, it was like I'd heard it for the first time. It stopped me in my tracks-it was a very "What was that?!" moment. I played it again and then again..and again...The Indigo Girls have long been a favourite of mine-their harmonies are so achingly beautiful and their lyrics are always so thoughtfully crafted.

The other thing I wanted to share with you is that Seth Apter has posted a whole host of events that will be taking place over the next few months in relation to the release of his new book, The Pulse of Mixed Media: Secrets & Passions of 100 Artists Revealed. As one of the artists who appears in Seth's book, I'll be participating in some of those events and I'll fill you in when I have more details.

The book will be released at the beginning of March, (which is less than 2 weeks away!) so if you haven't pre-ordered a copy yet, now's the time to do it!

Master Class

Some time ago, Seth asked "If you could take a class from one artist from anytime in history, including the present, who would it be and why?" Who did I choose and why? Pop on over to the Altered Page and see!

In other news, I spent hours last night trying to upload the year-end photo project but the file is pretty huge, so I'm having trouble. *sigh* I'll keep at it and hopefully have it up soon. It's certainly not for lack of trying!

Sneak Peek!

Exciting news! Seth's fabulous new book which is due out in in the spring, is now searchable on Amazon! This means you can get a sneak peek of some of the content. Seth sent me an email the other day giving me the head's up and I went and had a peek. It looks fabulous!

I also got to finally see who else is in the book, which up until now, was a mystery. Funnily enough, several friends and acquaintances contributed as well-I guess we're all really good at keeping secrets because I really did not know they were involved.

I can't wait to hold this book in my hands and flip through the pages, one by one. I know it's going to be a wonderful read.

Is it March yet?!?!

Catch Up Post

I have a new free desktop wallpaper for November for you to download if you like. I know this is a bit late, but it couldn't be helped!

Just click on it to get the full sized image and then right click on it and choose "set as background" and you're all set! Enjoy! This photo was taken at Stanley Park yesterday. I loved how the Japanese Maple leaves were in varying states of decay. Nature so beautifully illustrates the end of the life cycle at this time of year.

Seth Apter gave me the head's up that I'm one of the artist being featured today in his Technique & Tools series. Pop on over and have a peek to see what technique or tool I cannot live without! Seth shares a new post in this series every Sunday, so be sure and visit every week!

In other news, I spent the lion's share (pun intended for those who get it) of the day yesterday at Grey Cup volunteer training. The 99th Grey Cup is being hosted in our fair city. For those of you in the US, it's like your Superbowl, but without the wacky commercials and wardrobe malfunctions. *grins* I will post more about this tomorrow.

The Pulse: Edition #5: Style File

Seth has posted this week's edition of the Style File and my response was included. Do you want to know what's one of THE hardest questions for me to answer? Find out here.

Meanwhile, I'm taking some down time tomorrow. It's been a hugely busy (but good!) weekend and I need to unwind. Indy's missed me like crazy, so I'm proclaiming tomorrow "Day of the Dog" and treating him to a much needed outing. I see a trip to the lake in his future.

The Pulse: Edition #5

It's that time again! Time for another fabulous and informative edition of Seth Apter's The Pulse! The first posts will go up on Saturday, Sunday and Monday to kick off the project. After that, new posts will go up every Sunday. Seth says that given the number of responses he received, (125 artists!) he expects that postings will go on until spring 2012! Isn't that incredible? Eyecandy and brainfood for the next NINE months! Woohoo!! This weekend, he will also be giving away of a copy of The Pulse: The Zine, which is now out of print and no longer available. I have a copy (I was in it) and it's chock full of good stuff!

I've lost track of how many times I've participated at this point, but I submitted my answers to this latest addition, so at some point you'll see my answers pop up.

For those of you who don't know, Seth is also in the process of writing a book which comes out in early 2012. He's a busy, busy man! How he finds time to work, make art, write and keep his finger on the pulse of so many artists is beyond me! Amazing!

I'll be posting an icon link on my sidebar for The Pulse later this morning, so if you forget to bookmark it, just pop back here and click to be linked. How's that for a great way to celebrate the Canada Day and Forth of July long weekend?!

Still Breathing

So I'm still breathing. (Barely!) Last week I came down with some sort of plague. Seriously, this is the sickest I've been in a long while. My voice keeps cutting out on me and I've been coughing incessantly. I think at this point it's morphed into a sinus (and possibly ear) infection.

Needless to say, I've been spending alot of time in bed or on the couch with Indy snuggled up next to me watching HOUSE dvds, too exhausted to do much of anything else, other than sleep.

The cool postcard pictured above came from the talented hands of my friend Karenann Young. Every now and again Karenann sends me little gems like this in the mail and it's always a pleasant surprise. This one is so "me" as it says "morning person" which I most certainly am and then the part about the lake is also so appropriate as most mornings, I take Indy to the lake for a walk. I wish the flash hadn't washed out the colours so much-it really is a wonderful piece.

Also found in my post box on Friday was The Pulse Zine from Seth Apter of the Altered Page. Seth decided to put all the Pulse interviews together as a zine and my copy just arrived. It's great to have them all together so I can read through them again. There was so much information posted during the Pulse, it was alot to absorb. This way I can read it in bite sized chunks. I believe you can still order a copy if you're interested.

In between fits of coughing, I have manged to get all my gifts for the 12 Days of Xmas exchange completed, wrapped and packaged. They go postal today. Keep an eye on the exchange blog-we will begin posting photos of this year's goodies soon!

I am also doing a jewellery RR with some friends and my focal point (the beginnings of my necklace) is completed and also going off in the mail today. I am both excited and nervous about this project. I hope I do a good job on other people's pieces!

Well, that's it for now. I hear a cup of tea calling my name!
